Bloggin’ in Bulgaria: Day 3

December 7:

Today we left bright and early for the Rila Monastery, located in the southwestern Rila Mountains of Bulgaria. Denislava and Evgeny were our hosts for the day, and graciously toured us around and answered our many questions. To say that the Monastery was beautiful would be an understatement – it was breathtaking! Bulgaria’s architecture, history and culture was noted as we explored the grounds over the course of the day.  Today’s outing was a great chance for us to learn more about the history of Bulgaria while up in the beautiful Rila Mountain area. As a side note, the reason our hosts decided to take us to this particular monastery (they have many in Bulgaria) is because of the cover photo posted on our blog site – Thanks Judy.

After finishing up at the Monastery, we went out for lunch at a traditional Bulgarian restaurant up in the mountain.  The food was magnificent, and we all sampled trout, grilled yellow cheese (yes, for real, and tastes amazing!) and chicken kavarma (monastery-style). Honestly speaking, sampling Bulgarian cuisine has been an absolute delight these past few days!

We were interviewed by a newspaper today and asked to answer several questions about the operations of Career Trek and how we maintain successful programming outcomes.

Having dinner with the “School Makes Sense Program” advisory group and program staff.

Upon returning back to Sofia from our trip to Rila Monastery, we met the “School Makes Sense Program” (SMSP) advisory group and the project staff for a meeting over dinner.  It was wonderful to be able to discuss our programming framework with the advisory group and learn more about their plans to improve the SMSP operations as they move into their second year of operation.  The advisory group was very interested in learning more about how we include post secondary partners into our program and the means by which we engage the business community in creating future partnerships. The evening ended with some initial conversations on how we might arrange some kind of mutually beneficial exchange of intellectual property.  Exciting developments for all of our children!
